How to Participate in an Online Art Class
Are you nervous about technology? Not sure you’ll get as much out of an online class as you would in-person? I can tell you that students of all ages have loved my online art classes just as much as they do the in-person classes. It’s really easy to log into Zoom for your class and figure out how to participate. Here are a few testimonials:
“…I can already tell how enriching the program has been for my child [age 6] … Laura Lynne is so patient and thoughtful in her responses and how she explains what art skill they are learning during the class. She really allows and provides a safe and creative environment for the children to learn and grow as young art students.” – Amanda Hunkler, 2025
“(My daughter) loved the camp and looked forward to each day. She has talked about it non-stop (although she was super shy on camera), and she wants to do even more art camps.” – Maggie W.
What do I need to participate in an online art class
- A device (laptop, phone, iPad…) with a screen and decent internet
- A stand if you are using your phone or iPad so that you don’t have to hold it.
- A tabletop with room for your device, your art project and supplies
- Art supplies. I will email you a list of what you need and links to purchase if necessary.
You don’t need:
- The Zoom app, but it might be helpful in order to get used to the platform
- Expensive technical gear or screens
Tips for a Successful Online Class
- Turn on your volume and your video. Find the mic and video buttons before class starts. They are usually on the bottom of the screen.
- Turn off any background blur or virtual background images before the class. These backgrounds focus on your face so if you hold up an artwork I may not be able to see it clearly.
- Be prepared with all of your supplies nearby or on your table.
- Prop up your computer or device on a box so that if you spill water it won’t spill on your device.
- Keep paper towels or wipes handy in case you need to touch your keyboard and have art supplies on your hands.
- If you are using a computer, you might be able to tip the camera down to show your work surface.
- Enter the classroom by clicking on the Zoom link I send to you.
How can you see my progress with an online art class?
Usually I can get a good idea of your progress when you’re holding up your artwork in the screen. If the internet connection is bad then adult artists can take photo of the art and text it to me.
