How to Hire a Mural Painter for your Home

Are you looking for how to hire a mural artist for your city or business?  If so, read this.

You are ready to add that special touch to your home with a hand painted mural.  That is very exciting!  Here are a few things to know about how to hire a mural artist for your home.

  1. Murals cost anywhere from $20 to $70 per square foot depending on the level of detail and size of the mural.   (Find the square footage by multiplying the length of the wall by the width.)
  2. Experienced mural artists are busy.  They may be booked months in advance.  If you have a deadline for your project, find your mural artist as soon as possible.
  3. Mural artists will need a partial down payment, usually non-refundable and about 1/3 of the total project cost, to cover painting supplies and design work before painting starts in your home.  Paint colors are generally mixed in the artist’s studio before starting in your home.

What Information do Mural Painters Need Before Starting a Project

  • Dimensions:  Make sure to take accurate measurement of the height and width of the wall.  Don’t be offended if the artist needs to measure again.  (I can’t tell you how many times clients have given me the wrong dimensions.)
  • Photos:  Take a photo of the wall surface so that the artist knows if it is smooth or rough.  A rough wall may prompt a different design than a smooth wall.
  • Prep:  Will the artist do the prep or will you hire someone to paint the background color for the wall?  Many artists like to do the prep themselves to make sure of good paint adherence.  Walls with peeling paint may need to be scraped or power washed, plus need drying time.
  • Timeframe to Complete:  How long will the artist have to work on the mural?
  • Do you have an idea about what you’d like the design to be – colors, theme, etc…?  What furniture will be in the room and where? Let the mural artists know so they can plan the design.
    • A Note About Copyrighted Art/Designs:  Please note that some artists won’t paint copyrighted designs (Disney characters, for example.)  Disney has sued artists in the past for copyright infringement.  Some artists will paint copyrighted images in private homes.
